Through its history, the Catholic community in Indiana has faced challenges both internal and external. In the religious pluralism of pioneer Indiana, Catholic immigrants faced anti-Catholic and nativist hostility. By the late twentieth century, religious individualism in U.S. life and contemporary secularizing trends posed diverse challenges to a Catholic community that aims to maintain the doctrine, way of life, and moral values of the Catholic tradition. This tenacity amidst challenge and even adversity prompted the selection of the title Worthy of the Gospel of Christ.
