1976
Title:
US Bicentennial Quilt
Description:
Rather than having one central celebration, as in previous years, for the 200-year anniversary of the sign-ing of the Declaration of Independence, local celebrations were held across the country in 1976 to com-memorate the nation's bicentennial.
This quilt was made by Mrs. Deputy's third grade class of J. Wilbur Haley Elementary School as a United States bicentennial project in 1976. It features four rows of 5-1/4-inch squares. The center square is navy blue with white stars appliquéd with red yarn; "1776" and "1976" appear on the front in red with red yarn used around the numbers. The names of the children who made the quilt are around the outside border. The reverse of the quilt is red with a white border; stars and stripes are stitched in white thread over the field of red. The quilt is made of polyester-cotton blend material.
