Title:
German Prayer Books
Description:
In 1839, German Lutherans joined together and formally organized St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, affiliated with what is today called the Missouri Synod, making it the second oldest Lutheran congregation in Indiana. Located at the corner of Barr and Madison Streets, four church buildings have stood on this site. On 15 September 1889, the magnificent cathedral-like church opened its doors, only to be tragically burned to the ground in a 1903 fire. It was rebuilt and reopened its doors in 1905. Used at St. Paul's Lutheran Church by Albert W. Meinzen, the leather bound book was published in 1902 and was printed entirely in German. The owner's name is tooled in gold on the cover.
