Lutheran Hospital Baby Scale

Used in the nursery at the Lutheran Hospital on Fairfield Avenue from 1935 until the early 1980s, this baby scale recorded the birth weights of tens of thousands of new Allen County residents, including those born during the population surge after World War II known as the "Baby Boom." In the 1980s, it was moved to storage and replaced by digital scales. Lutheran Hospital moved from its Fairfield Avenue location in 1992 to the new Lutheran Medical Park on West Jefferson Boulevard and the scale was to be thrown out. A maternity nurse at Lutheran Hospital was given permission to take it home and she donated it to the History Center in 2012.
