Title:
Charles Lindbergh Air Sock
Description:
Following his famed May 1927 transatlantic flight, Charles Lindbergh toured the United States to promote aviation. While flying in Indiana he intended to land his plane, the "Spirit of St. Louis", in Fort Wayne on 10 August 1927. Unfortunately, when he arrived at the field, so many aircraft were in the air awaiting his arrival that he felt it would be unsafe to attempt a landing. Instead, Lindbergh dropped this air sock with a signed message rolled inside, a greeting "To the City of Fort Wayne." The yellow streamer with a white weighted pocket was dropped over the Allen County Courthouse and landed at the feet of John Anderson at the corner of Main and Court Streets-Court Street has since been replaced by the Court House Green on the East side of the building. Anderson donated the sock and poster to the mu-seum in 1928.
