Description:
Nathaniel Blanks Lamp-African-American

The nineteenth century saw African-American migration to Fort Wayne and elsewhere in Allen County. Whether removing themselves from the post-bellum South, seeking jobs in the more economi-cally stable North, or simply moving because they now had the freedom to do so, by 1900, 276 black residents had relocated to Fort Wayne and many more traveled through the city on their way to Canada seeking as much distance between them and the post-bellum South as possible.

Nathaniel Blanks was no exception, moving from Mississippi to Fort Wayne in the late 1880s. He owned a four-acre farm that bordered present day Warsaw and Dalman Streets, Weisser Park, and Ward Elementary School. The area came to be known as Blanksville. Nathaniel Blanks brought this oil lamp with him when he moved to Fort Wayne.
