Tire Sole Sandals
Description:
Tire Sole Sandals-Mexican

By the latter part of the twentieth century, the Hispanic community in Fort Wayne had grown signifi-cantly. This diverse group of people had immigrated to the city from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Panama, and from the Caribbean area of Puerto Rico and Cuba. They came to America looking for work and a better life.

These hand-stitched leather and tire sandals were worn by an immigrant when she crossed the Mexi-can-American border on foot. She was taken by a guide to cross into the United States, and while living in Fort Wayne, gave the sandals to be donated to the History Center for its Hispanic history project.
