This traditional Venezuelan instrument is called a cuatro. It has four strings on dark colored wood and was made by an artisan named Chirinos. This cuatro was purchased as a Christmas gift for the donor by his mother. From ages 8 through 13, he was taught to play the instrument by his mother and private instructors. The donor's mother was taught by Edgar Poito who was a member of the Venezuelan Lutheran Church in Maturin. The family and other members of the congregation played this instrument and similar ones at social functions and church services.
