Irish immigrant Allen Hamilton chose to settle in Fort Wayne believing he would find business opportunity in trade and land speculation. He was right. Over the years he amassed a fortune and a role of status, founding two banks and even becoming Allen County's first sheriff.
Another profitable business venture for Hamilton was becoming Chief Jean Baptiste de Richardville's personal financial and legal advisor. As the executor of the Richardville estate and legal guardian of Richardville's children, Hamilton depleted the estate's wealth leaving the family with virtually nothing. Hamilton's account books, including the Godfroy and Richardville families' book featured here, reside in the Allen County - Fort Wayne Historical Society's holdings.
