Chief Meshingomesia was the eldest of ten sons of Miami Chief Metociniyah. Metociniyah's village had previously been destroyed by American Colonel John B. Campbell's troops in the War of 1812. The Treaty of 1840 confirmed the Meshingomesia Reservation of 6,400 acres.
This .39 caliber octagonal barrel rifle dates to 1866 and was owned by Meshingomesia. It has a full maple stock with nickel silver inlay and an ornate brass patch box. The top of the barrel is stamped "J. W. Speelman 1866," the side is marked "Meshingomesia" in cursive letters.
