Title:
Wolf and Dessauer Santa and Sleigh Light Bulb
Description:
Wolf and Dessauer
Few sights are more iconic to Fort Wayne residents than the Wolf and Dessauer Christmas displays. Santa and his reindeer made their debut in 1940 and have been dazzling Fort Wayne residents on winter nights for decades and the tradition continues today.
Opened in 1896 by Sam Wolf and Myron E. Dessauer, the Wolf and Dessauer Department Store was a shopping destination, far more encompassing than a modern mall. Inside were lending libraries, cafes, and stores selling all manner of goods ranging from clothing to car parts. It was also the first building in the area to have escalators.
W & D saw three location changes and a managerial shift in its long life in downtown Fort Wayne. Owner Mr. G. Irving Latz was responsible for sketching the original designs of the light arrangements and spearheading the window displays that brought W & D much local acclaim as a traditional holiday destination. In 2007 these bulbs, along with almost 25,000 others from Santa and his sleigh, were switched out for more efficient LED bulbs.
