When Hugh McCulloch arrived in Fort Wayne in 1833, it didn't take him long to become an important figure. He was appointed judge of the probate court and cashier of the State Bank of Indiana. In 1863 he was appointed Comptroller of the Currency and launched the national banking system. He went on to become the US Secretary of Treasury for Presidents Lincoln, Johnson and Arthur. McCulloch was even at Lincoln's bedside when he died. Hugh later served as the US ambassador to Great Britain.
His quick rise to prominence was no doubt due to this letter of recommendation he carried with him from Daniel Webster, a prominent lawyer and Massachusetts Senator at that time. The letter stated:
Boston May 14, 1833
Hugh McCulloch Esq
Dear Sir,
Mr. Peabody has suggested, that a general letter from me, such as might be shown to any friend of mine in the Western States, might be useful to you in regard to the objects of your visit to that part of the country. I have great pleasure in complying with the suggestion; and tho' this letter be addressed to you, it is intended to express, to any to whom it may be shown, my good opinion of your character, talents & acquirements; & my confident expectation, should you settle in that region, that you will make yourself distinguished in the community & in your profession.
