Description:
United States Army Nurse Outdoor Uniform, 1918
Jacket of dark blue wool serge; jacket fitted with slightly flaring peplum, the back of which has two clusters of pleats; tailored revers; patch pockets with buttoned flaps; buttoned to waist with 4 black buttons; self belt fastens with 2 buttons.
Skirt of dark blue wool serge; ankle length, flaring at hem line; center front has vertical stitched pleat, or simulated fly front, with patch pockets on either side; placket at left side with snap fasteners; waistband of webbing.
Blouse of white cotton oxford cloth; high collar with 3 mother of pearl buttons; long sleeves have band cuff with 2 buttons; front closure below the neck band buttoned with matching buttons spaced 1-3/4" apart; back waist fullness gathers to a tape of cotton twill the ends of which can be tied to decrease the size of the waist. Tape at back of neck says, "Roxie S. Fife."
Hat of black felt, resembling a man's fedora; crown about 6" high, brim approximately 2-3/4" with no outer or inner band.
Boots of brown leather; high laced; linings stamped "Roxie L. Fife."

The 1910's saw many world events including the maiden voyage and subsequent sinking of the White Star Line's legendary ship Titanic. Perhaps the most impactful event of this era was the Great War or the World War now known as the First World War. While American men were serving on the front lines American women also joined up do their part. This US Army Nurse's outdoor uniform was worn by local Fort Wayne resident Roxie Fife who served overseas during the war.
